The Big Performance CBBC

The DJ School were featured on an episode of BBC's 'The Big Performance' on the 26th October 2010. We were asked to help a group of children build on their confidence, creativity and performance skills by teaching them how to perform electro-pop in a short afternoon workshop. The series included such big names as Craig David, Melanie C, The Wanted, Chris Evans and Gareth Gates. We are able to offer this workshop to schools, community projects and other organisations.

Workshop Outline

The workshop incorporates learning and using various different instruments, both electronic and acoustic, to perform a live electro-pop song as a small team. The students will leave the session with their song recorded onto a CD.

Prerequisites

Students are preffered to have a basic understanding of music mechanics. However, this can be introduced during the workshop if required. The minimum age for this workshop is 10 years old.

Class size

10 max for workshop.

Course Breakdown

The workshops are for small groups of 6 - 10 people of a minimum age of 10 with at least a very basic understanding of music. They include four different areas of performance, these are:

  • Drumming - a drum tutor will go through each student on how to use drums.
  • Singing - a vocal coach will give advice and tips on how to sing.
  • Djing - a DJ tutor will give each student a chance to DJ and use the equipment to manipulate sounds.
  • Electronic Music - a professional music producer will go through performing using electronic instruments. The producer will also go over recording the song onto the computer.

The workshop includes:

  • Introduction to the session and health and safety.
  • Introduction to each instrument/performance area.
  • Learning the instruments and the song.
  • Live performance of the song.
  • Mixing and recording the song onto a CD.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the workshop the student will be able to:

  • Perform confidently in front of each other.
  • Work as a team to create and perform a live song.
  • Play a new instrument.
  • Use a computer to record a song.
  • Work to a deadline.

Qualification

Students completing the workshop only will receive a certificate saying they have completed the short workshop.

They will also receive a copy of their new song that they have created.
